PinballSIM Features
The PinballSIM Engineering Design Game for STEM Learning was produced in partnership with the CTL at Hofstra University. Classroom use of the game is now available to educators for free.
The NSF has defined the focus of technology education as “the human-built environment that provides contexts for problem-solving and for understanding math, science and technology concepts.
PinballSIM provides the learner with an experiential learning opportunity in math and science, where the learner makes real-world connections by exploring how mathematics, science, and technology integrate in a design problem that comes from their everyday life.
PinballSIM challenges students to design and construct their own pinball simulation, providing a meaningful context through which learners apply and deepen mathematics understandings related to patterns/functions, numeration, and measurements as they use their knowledge of simple machines, such as inclined planes, levers, and plungers.
The learner applies important physics concepts like force, friction, elasticity, and gravity and to also apply math skills using algebra and geometry through a unique mixture of interactive simulation and informed design as they create their own original pinball simulation designs.Students also learn various engineering concepts while honing their problem-solving skills.
To prepare to design their own unique pinball simulation, the learner must research, experiment, and answer questions concerning energy, force, friction, levers, magnetism and gravity. If they need to research the subject, the PinballSIM virtual tutor is just a click away.
Perfectly suited for Introduction to Technology classes, PinballSIM includes a design brief, a grading rubric, guidelines for a written project journal and summary, and a list of standards addressed.
In addition to applying math, science and technology skills, the learner also applies management skills to plan the design to ensure the final product is viable, fine arts skills for creating an aesthetically pleasing product, and technical writing skills to create high quality documentation.
Learner Generate Theme Art
Registered visitors to Gaming2Learn.org can upload their own original creations of PinballSIM theme graphics, and rate those created by others, using the gallery upload and rating features found in the PinballSIM Menu above.
These uploaded PinballSIM theme graphics are then incorporated into future releases of the PinballSIM, selectable by the player (uploads are moderated and subject to the acceptable use policies of Gaming2Learn).
Design Efficiency High Score Concept.
The High Score Table for the PinballSIM Design Simulation Game is the result of the "Design Efficiency Score" achieved by the learner, where their average play rating is divided by the design cost.
